Ford maakt nieuw Team voor 2008 WRC-seizoen bekend.

- Hirvonen voert de strijd aan na terugtreden Grönholm
- Jari-Matti Latvala en Miikka Anttila nieuwe teamleden

Het WRC blijft voor Ford of Europe de belangrijkste autosportactiviteit in 2008. Vandaag heeft Ford een aantal belangrijke ontwikkelingen aangekondigd die primair zijn bedoeld om de concurrentiepositie van het BP-Ford Team direct vanaf de start van het komende seizoen verder te versterken. Het terugtreden van Marcus Grönholm en Timo Rautiainen, die de laatste twee seizoenen prima hebben gepresteerd, zorgde voor een behoorlijke uitdaging voor het team. De WRC-strategie van Ford is echter ook gebaseerd op het begeleiden van nieuw en veelbelovend talent. Vlak na hun overwinning in de laatste WRC-rally van het seizoen, de Rally GB, vullen nu Mikko Hirvonen en Jarmo Lehtinen de positie in die is vrijgekomen na het afscheid van Marcus en Timo.

Daarnaast is Ford verheugd te kunnen melden dat Jari-Matti Latvala en Miikka Anttila zijn ‘bevorderd’ en het komend jaar deel zullen uitmaken van het officiële Ford-team.
Lewis Booth, Executive Vice Chairman for Ford of Europe and Premier Automotive Group, verklaarde: "De man die Ford het gehele jaar op de hoogste plaats in het kampioenschap heeft gehouden is zonder twijfel Marcus Grönholm. Wij zouden nooit de "two in a row" hebben kunnen winnen zonder Marcus en Timo, die continue uitstekende prestaties hebben neergezet. Wij zijn uiterst gelukkig dat zij deel hebben uitgemaakt van ons team en wij zijn trots op wat zij voor Ford hebben bereikt. Marcus en Timo zijn één van de meest succesvolle equipes ooit – met hun 30 overwinningen is Marcus momenteel de op één na succesvolste rallyrijder ooit. Zijn aanzien in de sport is dermate groot dat wij Marcus niet helemaal wilden verliezen voor ons team. Wij hebben hem dan ook gevraagd voor volgend jaar een ambassadeursrol voor Ford of Europe op zich te nemen.”

Ian Slater, Vice President Communications of Ford of Europe and Premium Automotive Group, verklaarde dat de nieuwe rijdersbezetting een belangrijk aspect is van Ford's strategie. "Ford of Europe plant een langdurig succes in het WRC. Ons jeugdig maar ervaren team, met Mikko Hirvonen en Jari-Matti Latvala, is een duidelijk bewijs van onze intentie. Wij zijn van mening dat deze twee jonge Finnen de sterren van de rallysport zullen worden en we zijn heel blij dat we hen de mogelijkheid kunnen bieden om te groeien en zich de komende seizoenen te ontwikkelen, door hen op te nemen in een uiterst stabiel en betrouwbaar."

"Jari-Matti is slechts 22, maar hij is al in meer dan 50 WRC rallies aan de start verschenen en zijn ervaringsniveau is al hoger dan dat van menig oudere rijder. Hij heeft zich gedurende de laatste twee seizoenen onder leiding van Malcolm fantastisch ontwikkeld in een privé-ingeschreven Focus RS World Rally Car. Tegen het eind van het 2007 seizoen heeft Jari-Matti aangetoond dat hij rijp was om door te stoten naar de positie van een fabrieksrijder, getuige ook zijn voortreffelijke derde plaats in de Rally Ireland vorige maand. Hij zal in januari voor ons debuteren in de Monte Carlo Rally."

Malcolm Wilson, managing director van M-Sport, over het afgelopen seizoen. "Allereerst wil ik Ford bedanken voor het vertrouwen en het geloof. Ik wil ook Stobart bedanken voor hun inzet om Jari-Matti dit jaar te laten rijden. Hij heeft voortdurend veel aan vertrouwen gewonnen en hij heeft zich dit seizoen ontwikkeld tot de meest veelbelovende rijder in het WRC. Zijn prestaties in de tweede helft van het seizoen hebben hem deze aanstelling bezorgd. En omdat hij nu een groot deel van het testen voor zijn rekening zal nemen ben ik overtuigd dat zijn prestaties nog verder zullen verbeteren.”

"Marcus en Mikko hebben fantastisch samengewerkt en ik hoop dat Mikko zijn opgedane ervaring door zal geven aan Jari-Matti. Als ik terugkijk ben ik er trots op te kunnen zeggen dat zij vijf jaar geleden allebei naar M-Sport kwamen voor een eerste contact en nu zullen zij beiden een team vormen in 2008,” voegt Wilson toe.

Mark Deans, de nieuwe Motorsport directeur van Ford of Europe die vanaf de start van het nieuwe seizoen leiding zal geven aan het autosportprogramma van Ford, verbergt zijn enthousiasme niet: "Met deze fantastische auto en dit fantastische team kijken we uit naar vele successen in het komende rallyseizoen."

Ford of Europe plans to keep the WRC as its front line Motorsport activity from 2008. Today Ford announced some important developments designed, in the first instance, to maintain the competitiveness of the BP-Ford Team from the start of the coming championship season.

The retirement from the team of Marcus Grönholm and Timo Rautiainen, who have led its campaign in superb fashion over the past two seasons, has posed quite a challenge. However, Ford's WRC strategy has been based also on a programme to develop new, exciting talent. Fresh from their win in the final WRC event this month, in Rally GB, Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen now are stepping up into the role vacated by Marcus and Timo.

Further, Ford is pleased to confirm that Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila will also be promoted, as their team-mates, to complete Ford's official line-up for 2008.

We couldn't have won "two in a row" without Marcus and Timo delivering results so consistently. Marcus and Timo have been one of the sport's most successful pairings of all time - in fact their 30 victories have earned Marcus second place on the list for all-time rally wins. Such is Marcus' standing in the sport that we did not want to lose him entirely from our team. We are asking Marcus to take an ambassadorial role for Ford of Europe next year."

We believe these two young Finns will become stars of the sport and we're delighted to offer them the opportunity to grow and develop with Ford over the next few season, while providing all-important stability and consistency within the team."

"Jari-Matti is only 22, but already he has started more than 50 WRC events and his level of experience is higher than many older drivers. He has developed greatly under Malcolm's guidance in a privately-entered Focus RS World Rally Car during the past two seasons. Towards the end of the 2007 season Jari-Matti has shown he is ready to step up to a full works drive: witness his outstanding third place in Rally Ireland last month. They will debut for us in January's Monte Carlo Rally."

Malcolm Wilson, managing director at M-Sport, gave his views on the season just ended. "First of all I'd like to thank Ford for the trust and confidence. I also would like to thank Stobart for their commitment to run Jari-Matti this year. He has gained confidence by the day and has developed into the most promising driver in the WRC this season. His performances on the second half of the season put him in pole position for the drive. Knowing that he will now be doing a large part of the testing, gives me confidence that his performance will only improve."

"Marcus and Mikko have worked wonderfully together and I hope that Mikko will pass on to Jari-Matti the experience he has learned. If I look back, I'm proud to say that they both came to M-Sport for evaluation five years ago and now they are going to be partnered for the 2008 season," he added.

Mark Deans, Ford of Europe's new Motorsport director, who will head the company's programme from the start of next season, is not hiding his enthusiasm. "With this incredible car and team we look forward for a 2008 full of successes."
